Is Feminism Dead? by Margeaux May, Indiana, USA

When I reflect back on this week (September 7, 2008) I ask myself this question. Last Friday I confronted a man who, at my workplace, used the word “whore” to refer to a female staff member. I was apalled that no one objected. Last Saturday I had dinner with a couple of girlfriends, and upon leaving the restaurant one woman was approached by a man seeking prostitution. On Tuesday this week I joined a group of women for lunch at a local restaurant when a man approached a waitress behind the counter and screamed a seemingly endless series of profanities to publically humiliate her.

Excitement in Wisconsin by Louise Lovdahl, Kenosha, WI, USA

In May it was announced that several graduates of the Woman Within Training Weekend (WWTW) are excited about re-energizing and rebuilding a community of women in Wisconsin.  Informational meetings were held in Madison, Random Lake and in Wauwatosa to share ideas, consider priorities and gauge interest.  About 20 women attended the meetings and responded with “Yes, let’s do this!”

Meet: BJ Taylor: Empowered Woman, One With The Wind by Louise Lovdahl, Kenosha, WI, USA

What does a woman do when she’s burned out from working in corporate America and from heading a rape crisis center? For BJ Taylor the answer was to turn to the wind and adventures through sailing.

In 1979 on a trip to California, BJ sailed for the first time. Although she had been familiar with power boats in her childhood, BJ found herself in tune with nature on a sailboat. She was intrigued by the wind, the water and the currents -- things not under her control.

Chicago Women “Walk Their Talk” With Open Circles by Louise Lovdahl, Kenosha, WI, USA

Five years ago this month, Melissa Mondschain and Emily Halliday completed the Woman Within Training Weekend (WWTW) at House in the Wood and were in an Empowerment Circle together. Since then they have each stepped into several leadership positions in the Women In Circle community. Both women have extensive staffing experience, are apprentices on the leadership track and have led E-Circle trainings. Melissa is currently the Spirit Keeper (Community Leader) and Emily serves as the Empowerment Circle Coordinator, a position that Melissa has also held.

WWI 2008 Rose Award Recipients By Louise Lovdahl, Kenosha, WI, USA

A “Rose Award Recipient” is a woman who gives or has given her time, service and gifts to provide opportunities for women to discover the power of who they are. Service can be in relationship to aspects of the WWTW, serving on local boards, or in general service to the larger community. Each year, WWI invites the local regions to nominate one local woman to be honored as a recipient of the Rose Award, along with the nominees selected by the Board of Directors of WWI from the larger community.

Original Instructions by Joanne Mahler, St. Louis, MO, USA

Yesterday I crawled into our Fall Equinox Sweat Lodge with a troubled heart. When I emerged, I felt not only purified, but serene as well.

During the second door, the water-pourer related a story -- something that had happened to him recently that had caused him to think about his "original instructions", and whether he was remembering them, and heeding them, on this earthwalk.

:: heart words

A Glimpse

Hand in hand, in pale dusky light
They walk by Monona Lake
Following a pebbled dirt path
Heads together, murmuring
Bodies leaning inward
Shadows thread the path behind them

Your long dark stare
Caught my breath,
And my hope
That you would be full
of laughter and passion

Will we be lovers?.
Friends, yet not lovers?
You feel as if I’ve known you
Perhaps, as a brother?
Yet I know you could send me places
No one has before
And oh, I hope I can do the same
For you, someday.
