Ask Crone Judith (OTD): by Judith Pauly

Dear Crone Judith:

I am constantly inundated with the message " tis the Season to be jolly" and wonder why I feel like crap. Do you have any suggestions how to get through this stressful time? Really hoping for some peace.

Stressed Out

Dear Stressed Out,

One Jewish Woman's Perspective at Christmastime by Gail Sussman Miller

This is an interesting time of year. Starting with Thanksgiving, it seems we get on a roller coaster of food, parties, shopping, decorations, card sending/receiving, and what can feel like pressure to me. In 2007, retailers began with Christmas-themed music and decorations right after Halloween!

The part that feels like pressure is the number of choices and expectations about my level of participation.

Christmas Reflections by Becky Woolverton

My family has always had great fun at Christmas. As a child, I remember our home as a very modest, cramped home, with a coal bin. Yes, back then we had coal delivered to our house and dumped into a room in the basement via a tiny window. Thus, the threat of only receiving a "lump of coal" for Christmas was quite real.

Women For Afrika Leadership Project Appeal Yvonne Taylor

To ensure the ongoing work of Woman Within in South Africa, it is necessary to train resident South African women as Facilitators.

Due to the high cost of 'importing' Facilitators and Facilitators in Training (Fits) on each weekend. Yvonne Taylor (Woman for Afrika's International Coordinator and Council Member) is assisting two exceptional women in South Africa by raising money for travel expenses to attend WWL2 Training in Texas, USA in January 2008.

Woman Within International Multicultural Committee (WWIMC) by Harriet Hirsch

Last summer the WWI board grew from being a one-woman body to a three-women body. This new body, as I understand it, saw itself as transitional, and one of its goals was to help birth a realistic, representative, healthy new board of women to lead our Woman Within Community.

A letter was sent to all members of the community inviting them to join one or more committees that were being formed, representing a variety of aspects of the community.

Last Words:

"When you need nothing other than to simply be, you have
every beautiful and wonderful and miraculous thing there is. Life's richness is never more than a single thought away. Breathe in deeply the beauty, the wonder, the miracle that is now. Know the joy that cannot ever fade."

I’ve decided to donate a portion of my Christmas budget to the Chicago Tribune Holiday Fund. The Tribune receives a large amount of matching dollars from corporate contributors, and all of the money is distributed to small local charities, many of them caring for women and children. My reduced budget is incentive to get more creative with gift choices.

Gloria Chatman, a member of our WWI community, died on Thanksgiving Day. In the early morning she was preparing for the big dinner, felt tired and laid down, closed her eyes and was gone.

Gloria was a woman whose twinkling eyes and sweet smile attracted all kinds of people around her, especially young people, because she was loving and kind to all.

Earlier this year Heartbeat featured an article about Gloria's experiences on her weekend in October, 1995. Many times she talked about how much the WWTW meant to her in helping her reclaim fun for her life.

Movie: Freedom Writers

I am inspired. I am inspired by this film. I saw it last night and I can't get it out of my head.

It shows so clearly how much difference one committed person can make. It shows how much potential is being wasted, by the cruelty of racism, anger, misunderstanding . . .

It's like the movie Crash, of the teenager world. It's based on the book of the same title which tells the story of a teacher in class of students who are treated as 'throwaways' by the rest of the school system.

It reminded me of how much there is for us all to learn about each other and how no matter how hard I try, I will never be able to recreate a life like these people have, so how could I possibly really 'get' it. Yet, honoring their struggle and respecting them as people, regardless of the parts we don't understand is so incredibly important.

I urge you to see this film, and would welcome any feedback about it.

Blessings on us all this holiday season.
