Meet Me in St. Louie by Louise
Lovdahl, Roving Reporter for heartbeat
Have you ever read a book in which
you highlighted all the good stuff and when the book
ended you realized that nearly EVERY line was
highlighted? This happened to me with two eye-opening
books, “Privilege, Power, and Difference” and “The
Gender Knot”, both by Allan G. Johnson.
Allan G. Johnson
http://uhavax.hartford.edu/agjohnson/ is a writer,
teacher and public speaker on issues related to social
inequality and privilege. In other words, he presents
controversial issues such as racism and sexism in a way
that people can hear without defensiveness and guilt.
Allan Johnson will be the featured speaker at this
year’s Multicultural Council (MCC) conference to be
held in St. Louis the weekend of November 17-19th.
Saturday Dr. Johnson will present information and
facilitate exercises around sexism. Sunday will include
the annual business meeting of the MCC.
. . . . . . . STOP, go back. MKP and WWI are
tackling Sexism? Yep, that’s right. This WILL be
interesting and not to be missed!!!!
The MCC, an initiative of the ManKind Project, and the
conference itself are open to graduates of the NWTA and
WWTW and others interested in learning about the
“ism’s”. More information and registration is available
at http://mcc.mkp.org
The conference site is the
Pallonttine Renewal Center, 10 miles from the St. Louis
airport. Conference coordinator Dennis Nicely reports
that although the walls of the private rooms are “a
dull army green”, each room includes its own bathroom
with shower. Dennis enthusiastically states that this
conference is an incredible opportunity you won’t want
to miss.
Hope you will meet me in St. Louie for a weekend of
exciting and controversial discussions on sexism,
racism, patriarchy, privilege and making the world a
safer place for children of all ages.
